restoration

going thru my notes from a day spent with restorers at the vatican and remember listening to the head restorer in the lab describe the efforts to invent a gadget that could pin broken statuary together without any adhesive at all– to make it easy to take back apart– in an effort not to disrupt the history of the object — (listening to restorers and conservation people has made me think of them as always immersed in the time traveller’s conundrum of uncontainable consequences of action)–

and as he was explaining his best gadget so far he kept dropping pieces of the object in the process of being pinned– someone else in the group picked up some fragments from the floor and placed them on the table as we left.
