written for ultimate publication…

For art today all I did was start Shirley Jackson’s Hangsaman, and I am shocked, not that I love it but that I love it as I do.  She is a stylist after all, surprising, charming, and twisted by the sentence.  I confess I have always found “The Lottery” clunky, if unforgettable (what a worn out accolade– all I mean is I never forgot it).  I had to shut my ears for much of the first chapters of We Have Always Lived In The Castle to get to that brilliant and beautiful last third.  Natalie, our girl in H. keeps a secret diary “written for ultimate publication…”
